Frequently Asked Questions

What is therapy like?

I try to make therapy as comfortable a possible. Therapy should not be stuffy or formal. Typically clients talk about areas of their life that are troublesome and problematic and together we work towards broadening awareness and building skills to address these issues in a more healthy and non-judgmental way. It is pretty common for clients to say something along the lines of, "It is just nice to come in and for one hour not be judged. I can just be me and figure stuff out."

Can therapy help me?

Absolutely! However, it is not a magic wand. If I could wave a wand to make relationships thrive, kids turn into perfect little angels and all problems go away, I would be a billionaire! But seriously, I myself have experienced the positive impact that therapy can have on one's life and relationships. Therapy offers a place to really look at the way our early experiences and current circumstances interact and how they are intricately woven into our own personal story.

What will we discuss in therapy?

Anything you want! Sometimes people come in and know exactly what they want to talk about. Other times, what needs to be discussed naturally emerges throughout the session. But therapy is a time to get real, to get honest, and talk about things that we don't typically talk about outside of therapy. It is my number one goal to build a place where you feel safe to talk bout the things that are closest to your heart.

What if I cannot make it to a session? What is your cancellation policy?

Since your spot is held specifically for you, I ask that you cancel or reschedule as early as possible but no later than 48 hours in advance of your session time. You will be responsible for the full session fee if you no-show or cancel within the 48 hour window. Also, it is important to make every effort to attend sessions on a regular basis. Therapy outcomes are directly related to regular session attendance. Similar to physical outcomes when starting a workout routine, progress is made and felt with regular and consistent effort.

Why should or shouldn’t I utilize my insurance mental health benefits?

That is a great question and the answer will be unique to each individual depending on you own unique issues and circumstances. Insurance can sometimes be a more affordable way to access counseling. However, it comes with hidden costs. When you utilize your insurance benefits for counseling, insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis and this diagnosis becomes a part of your permanent health record. This diagnosis could potentially surface later in certain cases such as applying for a job that requires security clearance, adopting a child, or applying for certain types of life insurance. Sometimes, insurance companies require information about your sessions to justify on-going treatment. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact me to talk through your options.
